Rent Receipt Ontario Template
A rent receipt is a written record that a tenant paid rent — the date, amount, period covered, and property. In Ontario, landlords must provide a receipt free of charge whenever a tenant asks for one. Beyond the legal duty, receipts protect both sides: tenants get proof of payment for taxes and disputes, and landlords get clean books. Here's what to include and how to generate receipts in seconds.
Ontario's receipt rule
Under the Residential Tenancies Act, a tenant may request a rent receipt and the landlord must provide it at no cost. This applies whether rent is paid by cash, cheque, e-transfer, or any other method. Cash payments make receipts especially important — without one, the tenant has no proof the money changed hands.
Smart landlords don't wait to be asked: issuing a receipt for every payment builds a paper trail that ends most payment disputes before they start.
What every rent receipt needs
A proper Ontario rent receipt includes:
- Landlord's name and the tenant's name.
- The rental property address and unit number.
- The amount paid and the payment method (cash, e-transfer, cheque).
- The period the payment covers (e.g., October 1–31, 2026).
- The date the payment was received.
- Any balance still owing, if it's a partial payment.
- The landlord's (or agent's) signature.
Why tenants should keep every receipt
Tenants use rent receipts for more than disputes. They're needed for the Ontario Trillium Benefit and other tax credits, for proving residency when applying for loans or government ID, and for showing a clean payment history to future landlords. A tenant who can produce two years of receipts is a tenant every landlord wants.
Paper vs. digital receipts
Both are valid. E-transfer confirmations are useful but incomplete — they don't show the rental period or property address, and they can be hard to match to months years later. A proper receipt generated per payment, saved as PDF, is the clean solution: searchable, printable, and complete.

Frequently asked questions
Must Ontario landlords provide rent receipts?+
Yes — when a tenant asks, the landlord must provide a receipt free of charge under the Residential Tenancies Act.
Is an e-transfer confirmation enough?+
It's evidence of payment, but it lacks the rental period, property address, and landlord signature. A proper receipt is stronger proof.
What if my landlord won't give me a receipt?+
Remind them of the RTA duty. If they still refuse, keep your own records (bank statements, e-transfer confirmations) and consider contacting the Landlord and Tenant Board.
Do I need receipts for tax purposes?+
Yes — rent receipts support claims like the Ontario Trillium Benefit and prove residency for various applications.
Can receipts be digital?+
Absolutely. A PDF receipt with all required details and a signature is fully valid.
